UUCS Music

This will be our response to violence: to make music more intensely, more beautifully,
and more devotedly than ever before. — Leonard Bernstein

“May your life be as a song, resounding with the dawn to sing awake the light.”
—Jim Scott

We celebrate music’s joy and power to express the rich feelings of our hearts and support a vibrant worship experience here at UUCS. Our music program draws from an inclusive array of different musical traditions, styles, cultures and spiritual traditions.

Our choir is open to all who wish to explore their musical gifts under the able direction of Acting Music Director, Maggie Mahan, who delights in helping each singer discover new talents. In the choir, we enjoy fun and fellowship while always learning and exploring.

Complementing our volunteer choir and musicians, through the year we also enjoy guest instrumentalists and vocalists from the wider community.

Our music program seeks to use your musical gifts to center, celebrate and uplift. In the words of Oliver Wendell Holmes –
“Alas for those that never sing but die with all their music in them.”

The music during our Sunday service is not just about performance; it is a fundamental part of the whole worship experience. We know that music can set a mood, build a sense of community, affect our perceptions, improve our sense of well-being, and communicate emotion in a powerful way that often words do not. Our Music Director thoughtfully chooses hymns and choir anthems with messages that coordinate and enhance the theme of each sermon.

We extend a special invitation to all who love music to consider joining the choir. No previous experience required! The choir is a fun-loving, welcoming group that rehearses on Sunday mornings before service from 9-10am and 1:30pm on the second Thursday of the month with a summer break.

We are fortunate to have talented musicians share their gifts each Sunday. The various musical offerings allow members to serve the community by developing and using their special gifts.

We will also have our first Sunday of the month “Hymn Sing” in the Sanctuary at 10:10 am before the Sunday service where we fearlessly sing some familiar and not so familiar hymns together.

We have intentionally developed music as an outreach ministry by offering musical programs throughout the year which are scheduled beyond Sunday morning. With special concerts from unique artists, we bring the gift of music to people in the community at large.
